Pottery Course in Kyiv: From the Wheel to Glazing

Create your own collection of ceramic pieces at KUST. Over ten classes, you’ll explore the main stages of making ceramics, from preparing and centring clay to throwing tableware and finishing it with glazes.

The course is suitable for beginners and for those who want to improve their skills on the pottery wheel. It combines individual instruction, practice to develop your technique and glazing your own work.

How the course works

Stage 1 — Getting to know the pottery wheel and centring clay

Learn to prepare your clay and workspace, use the tools and position your hands on the wheel. You’ll practise centring clay to create a stable foundation for each piece.

Stage 2 — Throwing a cylinder

Practise opening the clay, forming a base and pulling up the walls. You’ll learn to throw a cylinder, the foundation for cups, vases and many other forms. The instructor will help you control wall thickness and the sequence of your movements.

Stage 3 — Making tableware and more complex forms

Begin creating your own pieces and explore silhouette, volume and proportion. Learn to alter a form on the wheel and refine the rims and details that affect how ceramic tableware looks and feels in use.

Stage 4 — Grogged clay, textures and details

Discover the properties of grogged clay, try decorative techniques and finish the details of your pieces. Individual guidance will help you work through challenges and strengthen your skills.

Pieces ready for firing will remain at the studio to dry slowly and undergo their first firing. After that, you can move on to glazing.

Stage 5 — Glazing

Choose your colours and learn about ceramic glazes and how to apply them. With guidance from the instructor, you’ll decorate your pieces to bring out their forms and textures.

After glazing, the pieces will undergo a final firing. You can then take them home to use every day or give as gifts.

The course includes 10 classes. You’ll agree with the instructor how to divide them between wheel throwing and glazing, based on your experience and the pieces you choose to make.

• Works are stored for 3 months from the date of the first class.

• Please give at least 36 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Otherwise, the deposit or half the value of the gift certificate is forfeited.

The gift certificate for this pottery course is valid for 12 months and can be used at any KUST studio in Kyiv with advance booking.
