At this ceramics workshop in Kyiv, you’ll create a lamp shaped like a great white shark: an expressive marine sculpture that comes to life when lit from within. Over two classes, you’ll learn to sculpt with clay, build a three-dimensional form and glaze your work in your own style.

What will your shark look like?

You can give the basic form your own character. Choose the position of the fins, shape the mouth and gills, add texture to the skin, and include graphic patterns or fantastical details. Your shark can be realistic and understated or become a colourful character with an unusual appearance and a story of its own.

How the workshop works

The first class lasts 4 hours and focuses on sculpting. You’ll learn to build volume from clay slabs, shape the silhouette, make and securely attach details, add graphic elements and create openings for light. A KUST instructor will help you get the proportions right and turn your idea into a functional lamp. Afterwards, your shark will stay at the studio to dry and undergo its first firing.

The second class lasts 2 hours and takes place no earlier than two weeks later. You’ll use ceramic glazes to add colour, transitions, contrast and decorative effects. The instructor will explain the properties of different glazes and help you create your chosen palette. After the final firing, you can collect your finished lamp from the studio or have it delivered by Nova Poshta.
