This workshop is for those who are truly “in the know.” Over two classes at KUST in Kyiv, you’ll create a functional ceramic bong by hand, from the first sketch and construction to your own decoration and glazing.

What will your ceramic bong look like?

There’s no set design: you decide on the shape of your piece. It could take the form of a character, an animal, a fantastical sculpture or an abstract art object. Bring your idea, and the instructor will help you turn it into a carefully planned ceramic piece that combines appearance with function.

How the workshop works

The first class lasts 3 hours and focuses on planning and sculpting. With the instructor, you’ll work out the structure, airflow path and placement of the main components. Then you’ll learn to build with clay coils and slabs, shape the body and develop your idea through sculpted decoration. Afterwards, your work will stay at the studio to dry and undergo its first firing.

The second class also lasts 3 hours and takes place no earlier than a week later. You’ll choose a colour palette and glaze your piece. The instructor will explain the properties of ceramic glazes, how to combine finishes and ways to create decorative effects. After the final firing, you can collect your work from the studio or arrange delivery by Nova Poshta.

Who is the workshop for?

This workshop is for those who appreciate unusual functional objects, original ceramics and bold design. Previous experience with clay isn’t required: the instructor will help with the techniques and construction. You can work on one piece alone or as a pair, making it a shared creative experiment.
