At this ceramics workshop in Kyiv, you’ll create a ceramic bird by hand, either as a functional lamp or a decorative sculpture. Over three classes, you’ll take it from the first form and detailed sculpting through to glazing your finished piece.

What will your bird look like?

The workshop provides the basic body form; you choose your bird’s character. It could be an owl, toucan, raven, parrot, puffin or a fantastical creature of your own invention. You’ll decide on the shape of its head, beak, wings, feathers, feet and decorative details. If you make a lamp, you’ll also create openings for light and space for the electrical fittings.

How the workshop works

The first class lasts 4 hours and focuses on building the foundation. With guidance from a KUST instructor, you’ll shape the bird’s body, learn KUST’s signature clay-clip technique and make a stand for it. Afterwards, your work will be carefully wrapped and stored at the studio. The second class must take place within a week.

The second class lasts 4 hours. You’ll sculpt the beak, wings and feathers, and add textures and decorative details that give your bird its character. The third class lasts 2 hours and focuses on glazing. You can combine ceramic glazes, underglaze colours and special-effect glazes to create your chosen palette. Your work will then undergo its final firing.

What’s included

The price includes three classes totalling 10 hours, ceramic clay, glazes, engobes and other materials, use of studio tools, all necessary firings and instructor guidance at every stage. Electrical fittings and an LED bulb are also included if you make a lamp.

Who is the workshop for?

The Birds workshop is for anyone who wants to explore hand-building with clay in greater depth and create a detailed piece of their own. Previous experience is optional: the instructor will help with construction, proportions and technical steps. It’s a lovely choice for a creative break, an unusual date or the chance to bring a bird you’ve imagined to life.
